Get U.S. Academic Credentials Authenticated

We authenticate documents for use abroad. If you want to present U.S. academic credentials in a foreign country, follow the steps on this page.

We do not authenticate the content or validity of U.S. academic documents such as diplomas or transcripts. An authentication certificate does not mean someone completed an academic program. The certificate authenticates the signature and seal of the Secretary of State.

Be aware that there are individuals and groups who issue fake academic credentials for a fee. The U.S. Department of Education has a database so you can check U.S. academic credentials.

How to authenticate academic documents

After getting the academic document, you should:

  1. Get the document authenticated by the state that issued the document.
    • Ask the office that issued the document for the name of the authenticating authority if you do not know whom to contact. This individual could be the state’s secretary of state, a lieutenant governor, or other authority.
  2. Submit your request for authentication services (includes your Form DS-4194, fees, and documents).
