Where to Apply for a U.S. Passport

You can apply for your U.S. passport in person, online, or by mail. Where you apply depends on how fast you need your passport and whether you are renewing your passport or applying for a new one.

In person options

  • There are over 7,500 acceptance facilities across the United States. They include post offices, clerks of courts, public libraries, and other local government offices.

    These locations:

    • Accept new passport applications for adults and children on behalf of the Department of State. They do not accept forms to renew or correct existing passports.
    • Offer routine or expedited service.
    • May require appointments.
    • Some passport acceptance facilities host events with expanded hours.
    • Charge a facility acceptance fee.
  • Passport agencies and centers help customers who have urgent international travel within 14 calendar days or need a foreign visa within 28 calendar days.

    These locations:

    • Allow you to apply for a new passport or renew or correct an existing one.
    • Require appointments.
    • Require proof of travel, such as an airline ticket or hotel reservation.
    • Require an extra $60 expedited fee.

Renew online or by mail

  • Eligible U.S. citizens who need routine service can renew their passports online.

When renewing online, keep in mind online renewals cannot be expedited.

Online passport renewal is only for eligible citizens within the U.S.

  • Mail your application to us if you are renewing or correcting  your current passport. Also, make sure your travel plans aren’t in the next 3 weeks.

When mailing your application, keep in mind:

    • You can choose routine or expedited service.
    • Postal employees should never review your application when you renew by mail or change your passport.
